History: Here!
Personality: Queen Elsa is, mainly, two things: cautious, almost to a fault, and extremely driven by her emotions. Though she had been told from a young age "conceal, don't feel," Elsa still feels--very much so. Her powers are amplified by those emotions, especially anxiety. Unfortunately, it's anxiety that Elsa feels more strongly than any emotion. Because her parents convinced her that her powers were dangerous, something to be stifled, Elsa draws a lot of shame from her abilities. It's because of this shame that she hides behind a mask of coolness, composure, and even aloofness. Elsa is, then, the calmer and quieter of the two sisters by far. Indeed, Elsa is far from detached: When Anna sacrifices herself to protect Elsa, Elsa falls to her knees and sobs. She's so struck by the grief of losing her beloved little sister--the little sister she had pushed away so often--that she can't even hold herself up.
And so, Elsa's guilt rears its head several times. When Anna comes to her ice palace to attempt to bring her home, Elsa's powers begin to spin out of control. Trapped by fear and guilt, Elsa retreats further into herself. She shuts Anna out once more... this time, for good, she's sure. However, as guilty as Elsa feels, she also feels an incredible self-preservation. She does not hesitate to hold of the men who come to take her away. Rather, she's desperate to stay, to not go with them. Again, this is born mainly of her fear and anxiety: Elsa truly believes that if she's alone, she will not be a danger to anyone.
Of course, Elsa isn't as detached as she communicates: At her coronation, Elsa jokes with her sister and even laughs. After running from Arendelle, she shows a different side of herself, too: One that's exhilarated and revels in her abilities. This is where Elsa feels comfortable, initially; she's alone, but as she tells Anna, "Yes, I'm alone, but I'm alone and free." Because Elsa is alone, there is no one to hurt--and she allows herself to let go. It's this time alone that brings Elsa's younger self out. It's a self that smiles, that embraces who she is, that's comfortable in her own skin.
It is mostly out of love that Elsa locks herself away, both before and after her disastrous coronation. Elsa's heart is staggeringly big and kind, and even during her coronation--though she's a nervous ball of anxiety--she tries to strike up a conversation with Anna. A way to repair their relationship, essentially. Her insecurity with herself stems from the failure to keep her powers in check and nearly killing Anna. As liberated as she is when she leaves Arendelle, that insecurity is so deeply seated that, soon, it comes back with a vengeance.
Despite all of this, Elsa loves her sister deeply, and would do essentially anything to protect her--even if it means creating a huge ice palace and locking herself away.
Inventory: Her dress from the movie.
Abilities: Elsa has a very impressive set of ice-related powers. She can manipulate both ice and snow. This ranges from creating snowmen to whole, gigantic castles. Elsa also has some power over wardrobe; she changes her coronation outfit to her trademark blue dress when she retreats into her ice palace. Additionally, she can freeze large bodies of water. Perhaps the most dramatic of her abilities is shown near the beginning of the movie: She brings an eternal winter to Arendelle. Because of her connection to ice, Elsa has an incredible resistance to the cold.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
✔ Elsa is shown to be a pretty quick learner. Once she runs from her kingdom, she embraces her powers (somewhat) and unleashes the scope of her abilities.
✔ Elsa's love for Anna is incredibly strong. It's the reason she ended up pushing Anna away, so as to protect her.
✔ Elsa has a pretty high endurance--she ran from Arendelle up to the mountain without showing many signs of exhaustion.
✔ Elsa can remain fairly calm in stressful situations... or she can, at the very least, act the part.
✔ Finally, Elsa does have a soft side that comes out when she's with Anna. At her coronation, she's shown laughing and smiling with her sister.
✖ Her fear is the main reason the movie's events are put into motion. This is instilled in her from a very young age: That her powers are dangerous. Elsa hides herself away from Anna, for fear that she will hurt her even more.
✖ Elsa's guilt weighs heavily on her. The guilt from nearly killing Anna stays with her for a very long time.
✖ Additionally, Elsa does not believe she deserves good things. Staying alone, she's convinced, will be much better for everyone in the kingdom.
✖ Elsa's sternness puts Anna off sometimes; though it's for the best, Anna reacts badly when Elsa refuses to give Anna and Hans her blessing.
( SAMPLE )
Characterization Sample: Oh, Anna... no... no, please no.
[ It feels like an eternity has passed before Elsa allows herself to breathe. One moment, she'd been on the ice in Arendelle, and the next... she had opened her eyes and found herself here. But here... where could that be, exactly? It's warm, almost inviting, but Elsa doesn't pay any attention to that. Not really. What she knows is that Anna is not with her.
Anna is... gone. She can't bring herself to put it another way. Gone, because Elsa had been so scared, gone because Elsa had been so foolish. She'd slipped up. Elsa's chest tightens, and she clasps her hands in front of her. It feels almost like a nightmare... and Elsa wants nothing more than to wake up from it. ]
I can help you, [ a voice says, and Elsa stiffens. Another person? How--? ] I can grant you any wish you desire.
Even-- [ Elsa's voice catches. It seems almost too good to be true. ] Can you-- bring someone back to life?
[ The woman smiles, and the flurries around Elsa calm. It's not a condescending smile; it's not a smile she's familiar with, hasn't been familiar with, in so long. It reminds her almost of her mother's smile. ]
In exchange for working here, for me, I can grant you any wish. [ The woman's voice is strangely soothing, but those flurries are still there, dancing around Elsa. She's not sure they will ever stop--not until she knows, for certain, that what this woman is saying is true. ] Now, what would you like?
[ It doesn't take a single moment's hesitation for Elsa to answer. ] My sister. You... please. Bring her back. [ She pauses, clasping her hands tighter to her chest. ] And... my powers. Please, help me control them.
[ The woman watches her, one eyebrow raised. ] You realize this will mean you will work for a very long time?
If that is what it takes, and what you say is true... then I'm willing to work as long as I must, [ Elsa replies, and the force of her own voice surprises her. So determined. So firm. It's been a long time since she's felt the swell of hope in her heart. She almost doesn't hear the woman accept, and her hand seems to move on its own as she signs the paper.
Signs both her life--and her name--away, to a woman who promises fantastic things. ]
